Check out the Carving Studio & Sculpture Center

Here at The Stone Trust we have a passion for stone walls, but also generally for many types of stone work, stone craft, and stone art.  We have been in touch with the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center in West Rutland Vermont, and we think they are a fantastic organization and are well worth checking out!  They are even extending you 10% Stone Trust Member discount to their workshops this year.

The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center offers unique sculpture education programs amid inactive quarries and former manufacturing facilities of the Vermont Marble Company. Since 1987, sculptors, students and connoisseurs have traveled to West Rutland, Vermont to draw inspiration from the native marble and the creative spirit that lingers from the once-global industry that thrived here.

The former company store of the Vermont Marble Company serves as the center for workshops, lectures, communal dinners and special events. A sculpture garden greets the first time visitor prior to their discovery of site-specific installations mingled among post-industrial ruins. Workshop participants work side-by-side with people of all ages and experience. Our Artist in Residence program encourages exchange of technical skills and aesthetic viewpoints with sculptors from around the world. Artistic excellence in contemporary sculpture is featured in our professional gallery and on our historic grounds.

An exciting season is planned for 2018 at the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center, with two and five-day workshops in a variety of sculptural media and Artists in Residence from around the world presenting their work. Gallery exhibitions feature emerging and established artists. SculptFest, an annual outdoor exhibition, showcases site-specific installations in and around the historic marble quarries.

Here are two selected workshops that may be of particular interest to Stone Trust Members and wallers:

Letter Carving for Beginner and Intermediate students – February 10-11

This “hands on” weekend workshop will introduce you to the ancient Roman techniques of V-cut letter forms using hand chisels and mallets. Students will be guided through the drawing, composition, and spacing of your letter forms and learn to translate your drawing into an inscription on a tablet of Vermont slate. No previous experience with drawing or carving is necessary. Class demonstrations and one-on-one guidance will be emphasized. Handouts of lettering design principles and reference material will be given to each student. Completing a simple inscription will be the goal in this introductory workshop. You will never look at letter carving in the same way after this weekend! For Intermediate carvers, you are welcome to bring a project to work on. Stone and tools provided in the workshop fee. Please bring a bag lunch, and your enthusiasm!

Fee:  $395 * Instructor: Kerry O. Furlani

Introductory Stone Carving- March 17-18

Two days of hand-carving techniques and stone carving lore introduce the beginner to reductive art-making and three-dimensional thinking. Use of the Studio’s tools and a moderate piece of Vermont marble are included in the fee. Discussions of safe studio practices and stone and tool sourcing help make this two-day course an excellent initiation to the craft of stone sculpture.

Fee: $325 * Instructor: Bill Nutt
