    9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Dry Stone Walling May 25 @ 9:00 am – May 26 @ 5:00 pm.  $595

Taught by Dan Snow, DSWA-GB and DSC Master Craftsman

The workshop will be an introduction to the basics of dry-jointed stone work. Wall building techniques such as using the length of each stone into the wall, and laying each stone to cover the joint below, will be explained and practiced in the construction of a freestanding, dry stone wall. Also known as a rock fence, the structure to be built will be akin to those found all across New England’s forests and fields.

The hands-on workshop is designed to teach homeowners and tradespeople the structural techniques involved in building a dry stone wall. An outdoor classroom provides the setting for practicing proper dry stone walling methods, and learning the craft in a fun, team based environment. Knowledge gained will prepare participants for their own projects and increase understanding of traditional and contemporary techniques used in all dry stone walls. Participants will gain practical skills that can be employed at home or in the field.

The workshop will begin by building and erecting guide frames, and attaching string lines. The construction will include base (footing) preparation, setting foundation stones, laying coursed, double-faced wall, wall core packing, setting through-stones and wall capping. Instruction will include safe lifting and handling techniques, assessing stone shapes for best placement, useful tools, and advice on creating your own dry stone project. The goal of the workshop is to offer a supportive setting for participants to learn and practice time-honored dry stone walling skills.
