  • 2.13 Contractors Workshop

This workshop is perfect for the landscape contractor interested in starting to build dry stone walls, or expand that line of work. In addition to the hands on building of a wall, there will be discussions of good work practices, pricing walls, proper foundations, etc.

A chance to learn from the women in North America who are DSWA Certifed Instructors! This workshop is an excellent introduction to dry stone walling for the homeowner, landscaper/gardener, artist, or hobbyist. Over the course of the day each participant will build about 25 sq ft of wall (one side), using natural round fieldstone. You will learn all the basic rules of structural walling that can be applied to any type of stone and project.

Our annual volunteer day at Scott Farm this year will be April 26th. We have lots of activities that need help to get ready for this years workshop season! We will be setting up for the flagging workshop and stairs workshop. Moving and sorting some stone, and setting up for our spring walling day, and much more.

Have a patio or walk way to build? This is the workshop for you!

Learn the fundamentals of patio construction in a fun, energetic, hands-on environment. While not strictly dry stone walling, flat-work is a common part of many projects. Doing a good job starts with a good foundation, and finishes with an attractive pattern of stone. This workshop will teach you how to do flat-work that stays flat and attractive for decades.

  • 2.40 Cheek End Workshop (Outdoor) - May. 4 & 5, 2019 (Dummerston, VT)

Whenever your building a wall, sooner or later it must come to an end. A cheek end is the typical way to end a wall. It is also called a wall end, wall head, or square end. Cheek ends are a particular challenge to build well and structurally are the most vulnerable part of a wall, so it is important to get it right.

Come join some skilled DSWA-GB wallers and Certified Master Craftsmen, building a new section of wall at The Stone Trust Center on Scott Farm. We have a retaining wall site all prepped out, and stone to use up. Maybe we can even work in some fun details or walling styles. This is a great time to work on practicing your walling, learning some new tricks and networking with fellow wallers. Level 1 or higher DSWA-GB Certification required to attend. Pro member attend free, basic members just $20.

Susan Allport, author of Sermons in Stone, will be giving a presentation based on her writings and research into the history of dry stone walls in New England and New York. The illustrated talk will be filled with great images of historic walls, and facts about the walls, who built them, and why. Sermons in Stone was first published in 1994 and is recognized as perhaps the best book about the history of stonewalls in New England. Signed books available after the presentation.

Join Master Craftsmen Jared Flynn and Brian Post on a guided tour through the stone walls at The Stone Trust Training Center and Master Features Park at Scott Farm. There are over 5000 sq ft of walls and features to see and learn about. The Stone Trust has the only permanent indoor dry stone wall training facility in North America. Outdoors in the Master Features Park there are dozens of sections of walls to see built in different styles, and with varying stone types.

  • 2.50 Intro to Stone Shaping 6/2/19

This workshop will spend the day learning about how to shape stones for use in dry stone walls. Participants will be introduced to a variety of stone types, and how to work with them. Both hand and power tools will be demonstrated and used. The stone shaping portion will focus on efficient practices, learning how to look at a stone and judge how to shape it, as well as proper use and care of tools.

Participants will learn how to maximize strength for a retaining wall while following the basic rules. Foundations, drainage, perforated pipe, filter fabric, geo-textiles and more are all discussed or demonstrated.
