Time

Work in a small team to assemble stairs. Come learn design principles for steps, proper base preparation, and how to move and manipulate large stone. Learn, too, how to integrate steps into other hardscape elements.

Workshop Objective:

To provide the basic knowledge required to build steps that are stable, durable, and safe to use.

Learning Outcomes:

How does step design and construction vary depending on stone size and type? What considerations go into preparing the base depending on drainage and soil type? What tools help ensure that you are building properly to accommodate the forces of friction and gravity? How do you safely move large stones?
Come learn what you need to know to design and build stable, durable, safe steps or stairs. Work with variations in materials and methods. Learn techniques for moving large stones by hand. Consider layout, dimensions, sourcing stones, understanding how to set the elevations with a story pole, shaping the steps, and integrating them into walls and other stonework features.
It is recommended that those registering for this workshop take at least one Level 1.00 or 2.00 course prior to this workshop, but it is not required.
Come learn from certified waller-teachers, most of whom earn their livelihoods as dry stone walling professionals.
